I've decided I'm no longer going to post a daily list of what I've been doing/working on. I recently explained that I had been sick for two days and that prompted certain people to post negative comments, implying that I should in fact be working 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, and that being sick in apparently unacceptable.
I've worked incredibly hard these last couple of months, and my 'reward' for it is yet more abuse and negative comments. It's clear that even if I was working 22 hours a day, 365 days a year a good proportion of you would still be unhappy. I should of known, because that's exactly how it's worked since I first started making this game.
Here is one thing I'd like to note. If you're not happy with the game as it stands, then please, PLEASE, don't spend money on it. You aren't 'pre-ordering' a feature that I'm going to create in the future. In addition, spending money on DF does not make you my boss. When you buy credits or a GM, you are paying for those things as they exist in the current game at this time, nothing else.
I'm going to continue working on missions, fixing bugs and adding new ones until the end of this month. Then in September I'm going to work on fixing the other major long-term flaws with the game such as lag, mutiplayer sync, high memory usage etc and convert the project from Unity 2.6 to 3.4 whilst implementing non-browser caching for faster loading times.
After that I'm not making any promises. I'll probably work on interiors and barricading, but I'm not going to post an ETA. It'll be done when it's done.

If I came across as a Dick I am truly sorry, I LOVE what you have created, I love the missions and if I seem impatient it is only because I can't wait for improved gameplay and whatnot as it would increase my love of the game. Also please don't let the people who are dicks and that being their intentions dissuade you from keeping us regularly updated.

There's always going to be people who moan and complain, it's just part of the gaming industry. Although I believe you made a huge mistake when stopped working on the game after the new zombie update, I understand that you've been trying your best to get this game back on track, and you have.
I also think you should keep updating the blog as much as you do because communication between developers and the community is one of the most crucial part of developing a game.
Anyway thanks Adminpwn for creating a fun game. Also, your hard work is reflecting positively on the website, just look at the exponentially growing number of players online everyday.
I never post anywhere on anything but this week's post bugged me. I LOVE your game.
ReplyDeleteI've never paid a penny for an online game but I have for this one. It is worthy of a subscription even without missions and constant upkeep and bug fixes. Cost is a steal for the entertainment value.
I love(d) your weekly updates. They will be sadly missed in their previous form.
As for the negative feedback? I heard somewhere (maybe an online comic):

We asked for missions, and now we have them, i have been playing this game for 2.5 years and it is always fun. Neil you have my support, blog what you want and don't put up with all the unhelpful comments, thank you for making such an amazing game, i already have a GM and when its time is up i will get another :P

I saw this and I would just like to say if you have a problem with how the game works currently then don't play simple as that come back at a later time if you have such a problem. And to you AdminPwn Don't let them get to you they don't understand the kinds of things you have to go through to make all this work I don't even completely but I know its not as simple a snapping your finger like all those others expect it to be. But I just want to trow an idea out there make a calender at the beginning of each month showing the days your going to post updates or something of this sort that way people know when the updates coming so they can't complain about you not updating.

ReplyDeleteI am officially done with this game, I check the blog every now and then to see what's been done and what's coming up, I haven't played the game for about two months because it's so repetitive and new gameplay is scarce, I've been waiting for Missions/Interiors to come out so I could get back into it, and was overjoyed when I saw you posting daily updates. But with a one-man development team, and such arrogance on your behalf, I think I'll just wait for Class3/4 from Undead Labs to get my zombie fix. Until then, I'll just pass time with Battlestar Galactica Online and good ol' Xbox.

ReplyDeleteStroking the mans ego is not going to change anything people. I think the positive side of people whining is that they enjoy what has been done and they want more! Anticipation is a horrible thing, especially in the young. I think the cause of the lazy and hurry up posts had to do with a lot of the vagueness of your posts. "Tuesday: Bug fixes." A simple worked 8+ hours bugs I think would have given a better idea of the difficulty in making a game of this magnitude.

I still hope things simmer down and we get some sort of update, but in the end the game will be finished when it is done. And its terrible. They don't know what its like to program, and they talk like they know what its like. They don't matter at all. Ignore them. I taught myself programming, along with taking classes, and I have seen how hard it is. I feel for you, and for you to be doing this nearly solo, its got to be hard. The game is so amazing for how long its been out. Nobody should complain. you put real effort into keeping us informed. And people shit on you like they didn't care.

Hey admin! i had a GM for a while and the only reason i canceled was that i am saving for a car. Once i have a car you can expect me to get a GM again! woot! anywho i suppose its up to you wether or not u update it regularly. i still check it like twice a week (which is alot for me), and will continue to do so. Hey Admin, i know you must be having a really shitty time with the negative feedback about your effort on the game. Just try not to let it get to you so much, people will never be completely pleased. You have supplied the world with a wonderful game which I appreciate enormously and every time I play I feel as if I'm going on a new adventure in the world of gaming. Even in the 2D days I played this game like a crack addict an did all I could to do odd jobs to earn money to buy from the credit shop. And no matter what, whenever I am asked if I know of any good games, the first thing I say is Dead Frontier. You are a hero, sir. I know the community is being harsh but they don't even know the beginning of game development and are very impatient. Just keep doing what you're doing, because it is just awesome. Kudos, bro!

Also, Neil, I can't cry about not being able to read the updates every day, because honestly, I could never check them every day. So I'm neutral on this point: I simply don't care. It sucks that you have to dwell on all the negativity, but oh well, I'm not one to speak on anyone's lifestyle (I'm a really bad procrastinator).

ReplyDeleteJust want to say that all the negative hostility is what you must expect when you put a soft 100$ price tag on your game. Then expect people not to be upset when their 100$/300$ doesn't seem to be going to anything.
ReplyDeleteIt's his call, if he doesn't want to update anymore, he doesn't have to. If he doesn't want to work on the game anymore, he doesn't have to. There is something to be said about listening to your fanbase, but when your fanbase is partly a bunch of ungrateful rejects, I can see where one would get annoyed.
ReplyDeleteIt's easy to claim that he should focus on the positive feedback, as indeed, there is quite a bit of support for Neil. But when you work your ass off every day on something and catch a bunch of shit for not only working on said project, but bothering to post about what you're up to, it's easy to start letting the negative bits get to you.
No one has a right to decide what is enough to push someone over the edge. Personally I've seen dev blogs that go once a month, and have way less detail done in a month than this man can do in a week, by himself, and if he's sick of listening to people bitch when he bothers to put that shit up for us to read, so be it.
I like DF. I think it needs a LOT of improvement before I would suggest it to people seriously, but I bought GM so I could show him a bit of support. I don't think it entitles me to crack a whip at him, I like what he's doing, and I trust he'll take care of his own game. If he doesn't, shame on me, I'm out eight bucks, boo hoo. If he does, it was well worth the money to assist another man in achieving his goal.

On the tank part mission I encountered a Bug...
What happened was I got 9 parts out of 10 When I got a security error then the strangest thing happened : /
When I refreshed the page and logged back in I could not search any trucks on any of the blocks...
This became a rightful pain in the ass because I could not get the last part no matter what I did, So I decided to ditch the parts and just loot at deathrow -.-
I don't know if it was just my pc or a mission error but could you check that out plz?
Also With the giant spider mission there were not really any bugs but a couple of things did hit a nerve or 2 D:
First off the moment you enter the area to get attacked was a pain did not really give you a chance to get your bearings or react, A pain but not really a problem I just wanted to get that off my chest lol
2nd thing was When I killed the sob I could not loot it cuz the aggro was sky high and I could not run around the block to shake the zed cause the big mofo Banged me up real hard got down to serious, and when the aggro did finally quiet down other players would run around me with another giant spider and a whole ton of aggro...
And then when I did get a chance to loot it a leaper spawned next to me and killed me...
And when I hauled my ass back up there the spider corpse was gone and I had another 1 on my ass... Which really sucked balls lol
So I was wondering If you could do a edit here or there, Like If you killed the spider Then the aggro could die right down, Or if the horde chasseing you manage to kill you then the spider corpse could still be there when you got back up there...
I mean it just sucks to have to walk all the way back up only to find you have to kill another 1:(
like the whole time I was listing to the song snap by slipknot while walking back up lol
I mean Idc about all this with street bosses, that’s the whole fun of it and point :p
But come on give us a break on mission bosses you got mobs of player’s aggro spamming and being chased by their own bosses that might change course and attack you!!! D:
So in other words I won’t really see any point on doing boss missions I could just go boss hunting with friends you know?
When I’m a higher lvl I Would take it on again but until then I just could not be bothered I’d rather deep loot so yeah…
Now Don't get me wrong Adminpwn I'm not angry at you or the game or even the mission, Well a little bit the mission, I mean I love this game and am very grateful that it exist and you gave it to us AND!!! will Hear the players out That Makes us feel involved and is just downright awesome even if you won't reply or make /take the idea on The fact you just heard us out is GREAT!!! Not many game designers can vouch for that :)

P.s the leaper 1 hit ko is a bit bs and a pain I was wondering if you could give it a base damage of 40 to 80 with a chance to hit a critical dealing 5 times the damage?
That way it could still ko players in 1 hit.
I just hate the idea that when I’m lvl 200 A leaper could walk up to me and KO my charter in hit with full hp and dusk armour on lol >.>
And 5x 60 is 300 so that still is a lethal hit :)

there no interiors in 3D yet, there was only in 2D.
This means you'll have to wait for the interiors update(probably next year :p. Until then, you won't be able to get insinde anything.

and @Admin, the trolls try to sound like they know shit about making anything, or about how much time and effort it takes to make and maintain a game, let alone one as big as DF. The game has come a LONG way, from being a simple enclosed 2D game, to a full out 3D multiplayer awesomesauce game. Anyone who can do that solo has a LOT of talent and skill.. you are awesome :D

I understand you have a family and I understand that making and maintaining a game entirely by yourself (by choice I assume) is demanding.
But to take a 4-5 month break, come back like this demi-god on a white horse and make these estimated deadlines? I realize they are estimated, but people get excited and want to at least you stay within the ballpark of them. Do a weekly update on your dev blog, disallow comments- because let's face it, nothing about the comments are constructive to your game (or to your spirit).
This comment was not to piss you off, or to start a flame war with the little kiddies that frequent these boards.

Now, I will explain who I am. I'm not some preteen flamer and I'm not some 30-year-old living in his mother's basement. I have a master's degree in management, and I'm an operations manager for a small construction company. Also, I have never payed for an on-line game before this. Hell, I wouldn't even consider myself an avid gamer.
At some points while reading this blog post I felt sorry for you, at other points I felt disheartened, and by the end I felt disgusted. I have only ever posted on the blog once before, and that post was quite neutral. You have an amazing beta game, but it's just that "beta". This is not a finished product. Your customers are paying for the promise of a completed game. I know that's what I'm paying for. I started playing this game almost a year ago, and I've been a GM for most of that time. I have spent nearly $300 on this game, and I only did that because I thought you had an amazing basic game / premise with which to make an absolutely epic completed game. I had no problem spending my money (on creds) to invest in the future of this game. If I believed that this was all the game would ever be, I would have never spent money on it.
Allow me to explain some basic principles of business to you: Your customers are your boss. Customers, by nature, are never happy. That's why so many companies spend so much time pandering to their customers. Who is the boss of Ford Motor Co.? The CEO. Who is the boss of the CEO? The Board of Directors. Who is the boss of the Board of Directors? The shareholders. Who is the boss of the Shareholders? The marketplace. Who is the boss of the marketplace? You guessed it, the customers. Actually, the customers are the marketplace. Without income you have no product, and without a product you have no income.
Like I said, I'm an operations manager for a small construction company. If I told my clients, "Sorry your structure isn't being built fast enough, but I'm sick of your bitching, and you're not my boss," they would fire me. I also couldn't tell them that I refuse to give them status updates because they are whining.
You let your emotions run away with you. That is never acceptable in business. No matter what you want to tell yourself, you are in business. You have completely let the negative comments consume your thoughts / business practices, and you have entirely overlooked the positive feedback. In business there is an equation: each negative comment equals ten unhappy customers; while each positive comment equals one hundred happy customers. Given that equation, you have been making most people happy. However, if you continue down this road of insulting your consumer base expect those happy customers to go away.
Thank you for all your hard work, and I hope you continue to keep up with the good work.

I would like to point out a typo in the "Spiders, Spiders Everywhere!" mission. When he says he's going "all out war on these" whatever, it says "one" instead of "on." ReplyDeleteThing is, I believe he is right. Yes, Admin will always have this steady support from the few. But he needs to please the majority, NOT ALL, but the majority of his database. ETA's are considered important in most MMORPG's. If Admin Can't make them, he may need to start hiring people that can help that are familiar with computer language. People expect Deadlines to be held. And, most of the time, they can accept one or two missed deadlines. But not many. This is where you get the negative comments and the negative feedback. It's from your past history as a person who makes those Deadlines.
With him continuing to get our hopes up, then saying stuff like his post, It kind of makes me want to quit DF. Yes, he has a life. Yes, he has kids and a family. So do CEO's and owners of other major gaming labels. Admin, you said in one of your posts "WTF AM I DOING?" You said that you foresaw other games, OF THIS VERY GENRE being built that would more than likely surpass your own. Each one of them had a VERY broad budget, and you said that you would take advantage of your "Head Start" while you still could.
What happened to that determination?
Yes, many of the player-base is younger than you. Yes, many of them are CC Nubs that just buy into the game to win. That what this game is, "Free to play, Play to Win." What happens if that player-base dwindles because of you becoming emotional over the comments of the few?
Admin, I apologize if i seem harsh, i do frequent this everyone once in a while. I have posted once or twice to reproach trolls. However, What i saw in you when you first started daily updates, your determination, your will to get done what needed to be done... that's what i admired..

Admin... In all honesty, you are in your thirties. you have more going for you than most your age. Don't let the few people with comments as such they say bring you down. Especially like this.

For a while I had not played as much as I used to, but ever since the missions have come out I've been on every day for at least an hour at a time. You've done well my friend. May the haters be eaten by zombies during the pending apoc.

Hey Neil, ZombieNatation2012 here. I thank you for all the hard work you have done. Quite frankly fuck the trolls who complain. If you got this game done tonight and finished everything, they would still complain about this or that.
ReplyDeleteI've spent about $1,500 since November of last year and will continue to spend my money here. Why? Aside from a huge love for all things undead, I see a mmo here that is ground breaking & has a very dedicated Dev/admin. I enjoy this MMO and for the most part, the community. You are only human, you need time off so you dont get burned out. So you do what you need as you see fit & your true fans & loyal supporters are standing behind you.
Sure, some things I dont like, but hey, they game is in "BETA" stage. You are one man, not like you have the power of Sony or EA behind you with unlimited resources & man power at your beck & call. The true MMO players in the community here understand this & respect that. I, personally, thank you for all that you have done in the 13 month or so that I have been playing under this account name. I have seen many huge improvements.
Just be you & do what you need to do when you need to-but we love to hear of your progress from time to time. Not all of us are assholes(at least not at you xD )

ReplyDeleteI am not complaining. I am simply stating how a business runs. And money is what keeps this game up and alive, you must realize that. It takes money to upkeep all of this. Thus, read, and fully understand before you comment and say who is complaining.

This game reminds me so much of "Fallout" series. And Fallout (1&2) were some of the best rpg's I've ever played. (And yes, I've played helluva lot of rpg games)
